2024 GMC Sierra EV electric pickup promises crabbing, 400-mile range

By on October 20, 2022 0

GMC’s 2024 Sierra EV pickup will offer unique styling, 400 miles of range and a host of premium features when it goes on sale in early 2024.

The Sierra’s four-wheel steering will also allow for lateral “crab steering” for maneuvering in tight off-road spaces and Montessori parking lots. Plus, it comes with special features in the area where a traditional engine once stood.

Sharing its physical architecture with the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Hummer electric vehicles, the Sierra, like all of GM’s new electric vehicles, will use the company’s Ultium family of batteries, electric motors and controls.

GMC will initially manufacture the Sierra EV alongside the GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV and the Chevrolet Silverado EV at its Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck. It will add production at the Orion plant just north of Detroit to meet projected growing demand.

Among the noteworthy mechanical features of the Sierra EV:

  • Two electric motors
  • All-wheel drive
  • One-pedal driving and variable regeneration settings
  • Four-wheel steering
  • 24-cell lithium-ion battery
  • Up to 400 miles of range on one charge
  • DC fast charging up to 350 kW
  • 754 hp and 785 lb-ft of torque in maximum power mode
  • 0-60 mph in under 4.5 seconds
  • Standard Multi Pro seven-way tailgate
  • Up to 10.2kW of power for jobsites, tailgate parties or homes
  • 9,500 pound towing capacity
  • 1,300 lb payload
  • Pneumatic suspension
  • Super Cruise hands-free driving system compatible with a trailer
  • Up to 14 camera views

Flexible bed and cabin, feature-rich interior

The Sierra EV’s bed is 5 feet 11 inches long, nearly a foot longer than the Hummer EV pickup. Combined with the opening of the Sierra Cab’s fold-flat rear bulkhead and 60/40 split-folding seats, this creates space for loads up to 9 feet 1 inches long. With the tailgate down and its load stop engaged, items up to 10ft 10in can be laid flat.

In addition to the folding rear wall, the rear cab window can be removed and stored in the cab for larger loads or outdoor driving.

The front trunk includes cargo ties, lights, two drain plugs and an electric hood.

GM calls this useful compartment – where the engine goes in a traditional pickup – the “eTrunk”. It may not be Shakespeare, but it’s infinitely better than “frunk”, the label some brands use.

The four-door crew cab is larger than the cabin of the conventional Sierra pickup.

It seats five and is packed with features to match the Sierra Denali’s premium price and aspirations.

Cabin amenities include:

  • 16.8 inch touch screen
  • Physical switches for climate controls
  • 14-inch multi-color HUD display
  • Open pore wood
  • Fixed panoramic glass roof
  • Newly developed “vegan” quilted padding

Unique GMC styling

The Sierra shares almost no sheet metal with the Chevy Silverado EV that will be built alongside it. The hood, front fenders, front doors and rear fenders are all exclusive to Sierra.

Google services will provide cloud-based navigation, including route planning that includes interactive charging advice.

Other notable exterior features:

  • No space between cabin and cargo box
  • Solid grille panel opens upwards with power hood
  • Sequential turn signals, approach and departure lights.
  • Three small low lights in the front corners indicate charging
  • High and low beams positioned low in the bumpers to reduce glare for oncoming traffic
  • 24 inch wheels and 35 inch tires

How much will it cost you?

A limited-production Sierra Denali Launch Edition will retail for $107,000.

GMC’s highly-anticipated electric pickup will be positioned upmarket compared to the Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup, which is expected to go on sale in the first half of 2023.

Prices for Sierra EVs will eventually start around $50,000, but General Motors’ premium truck brand is in no rush to round out the lineup as it expects to sell tens of thousands of extremely profitable Denali models. .

After a year of building only the Sierra Denali Edition 1 and regular Sierra Denali pickups, GMC will add less expensive AT4 and Elevation models of the electric pickup to the 2024 schedule.
