AAM’s electronic transmission will power the Mercedes AMG GT 63 SE Performance, Auto News, ET Auto
New Delhi: American Axle & Manufacturing (AAM) today announced that its electric drivetrain technology will power AMG’s first plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) model, the performance Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE. AAM will supply the rear drive unit for the performance car, according to an official statement.
“AAM’s electric drive unit delivers superior vehicle performance in a compact, high-power-density design,” said David C. Dauch, president and CEO of AAM. “It continues our work to be the supplier of choice for OEMs as they expand their electric propulsion and e-mobility offerings.”
According to AAM, the electric drive unit, located on the rear axle, is the first series production application combining a mechanical all-wheel-drive system with a 2-speed electric drive module. This layout of the P3 system, with the electric motor on the rear axle, optimizes weight distribution and increases total torque output, compared to a transmission-mounted electric motor (P2 hybrid).
Mercedes’ performance car can generate 620kW / 843hp at peak levels, clock a 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 316kph (196mph).
AAM’s e-drive will deliver 150kW/204hp of power/torque, add performance to the hybrid drive and contribute to zero emissions.
