Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki talk about their off-screen romance like they’ve never done before in new oral history on The Big Bang Theory. The actors, who dated from 2006 to 2008, detail how they fell in love, who made the first move and why they ultimately broke up in the forthcoming book. The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series.

“I had a really big crush on Johnny at first. I wasn’t even hiding it. He’s got such a swagger. We were both dating people back then, but I only had eyes for Johnny. Then when I found out he had eyes for me too, I was like, Uh-oh, that’s gonna be a problem,” Cuoco shares in a snippet obtained by vanity lounge. Galecki says he “had no idea of any crushes until Kaley and I started dating.”

Cuoco and Galecki’s characters, Penny and Leonard, first kiss in episode 6 of the show’s first season. It was also the first time the actors locked lips.

“All the scenes until we got together in real life, it was obvious there was always something out there. There was chemistry and we were in love with each other. It was all season one until we got together for real,” Cuoco recalled, admitting she was “really nervous” when they kissed for the Halloween episode.

“I mean, I kissed her as Penny before we dated, and it’s weird when you have a crush on someone and kiss them as an actor,” he explains. -she. Although it took months for the two to finally kiss off camera, it soon became apparent — even to Galecki — that they had a connection.

While filming “The Nerdvana Annihilation” episode later in Season 1, Cuoco and Galecki had to film a dream sequence in which Leonard saves Penny in the elevator shaft.

“It was not a pleasant experience for me,” Cuoco says.

“We had to be in each other’s arms – and for a while, because it was a bit of a stunt that we were doing,” Galecki recalls. “That was definitely one of the times I think…”

“I think we kinda fell in love in that elevator shaft,” Cuoco interjects.

“We felt something, yes. I think it was a turning point [in our relationship]. At that point, she and I knew that something reciprocated was going on, and that it would be more of a distraction from work to try to keep ignoring it than to acknowledge it and surrender to it,” confirms Galecki.

Cuoco eventually separated from her boyfriend, and within hours of their breakup she joined Galecki and the rest of the cast on a trip to Montecito, California. They all had separate booths, but the actress tried to get Galecki to come to hers by calling and asking him to come kill a bug.

“Now, to this day, I don’t know if that story is bullshit or not, and if she was flirting with me because she had just broken up with her boyfriend, but I didn’t go to her cabin,” Galecki declares.

“There was definitely a bug in my room and I was flirting with it! So both were true! I was like, Ooh, that might be a good way to get it in! But it didn’t work,” laughs Cuoco. “I couldn’t believe he turned me down. I still think he turned me down because he knew what I was doing. I used the bug as an excuse, and it still hasn’t come.”

Galecki ended up making the first move shortly after that trip when he invited Cuoco to meet for a glass of wine.

“We started kissing at the bar, then we kissed in the parking lot. Johnny can really get in the head and want to hide, while I’m the complete opposite. I would have told everyone everyone the next day at the table to read. I would have announced it and said, We are together! But he was like, ‘We can’t tell anyone!’ So we kept quiet,” Cuoco recalled. “And don’t forget, it was different back then. Social media was nowhere what it is now, so it was easier to keep it hidden. You didn’t know as much about people as you do now. It’s a different world.”

The cast finally told the cast and crew and no one was so surprised. Galecki and Cuoco’s relationship was serious — “Kaley and I considered getting married,” he says at one point — but her need for intimacy ultimately contributed to the couple’s breakup.

“We come from very different worlds, but we also seem to blend into each other’s world in a way. It was great fun teaching each other different things, but when I came to wanting different things, it made things more complicated,” says Galecki.

“I think one of the things that created a chasm between us was my strict privacy policy, and Kaley was very, very open about her life. I was very uncomfortable talking about it publicly, and I think it hurt Kaley’s feelings a little bit, and I can understand that,” he continued. “It definitely wasn’t because I was embarrassed by her or our relationship, but I wanted to protect acceptance of Penny and Leonard by the public, and without being distracted by the tabloids.”

Galecki continues, “I’m private in general, but that made me feel particularly uncomfortable because we were working together, and the show was sort of snowballing at the time in terms of viewership. And at some point, we felt like we were going through this lying because we were going to award shows and parties and pretend we weren’t a couple, when in fact we were a very much in love couple.”

While Galecki says they “had very different interests in what I think we wanted from our life experience,” that didn’t stop them from becoming close friends after the split.

“I love the friends that we are. I think I could value my relationship with her more than any previous relationship or subsequent relationship,” he shares.

Cuoco didn’t appear to challenge her view on the breakup, but added more context.

“Johnny and I were also running out of things to talk about, because we were at work all day and then we’d go back to one of our places together and say, ‘So how was your day?’, Simon was funny. today, wasn’t it? And we were laughing because we had no mystery,” she recalled.

“But we were together a long time. We really adored each other, and we were lucky because while our breakup was happening, there was no foul play, there was nothing wrong with our relationship. …it just ended,” Cuoco continued. “Yes, there was a little bit of trouble there for a while, but it didn’t take us that long to get back to where we were before we were dating and being friends. He was in the front row at my two marriages, and we have since, we support each other so much.

Galecki always keeps his private life a secret. The actor split from model Alaina Meyer in 2020. They share a son. As for Cuoco, she is dating ozark actor Tom Pelphrey. They walked the red carpet together at the 2022 Emmy Awards, so it looks like they’re not at odds about being open about their relationship.
