KK’s This N’ That Shop brings a general store vibe to Somersville – Hartford Courant

Somers — Karen and Delbert Campbell opened their KK’s This N’ That Shop, at 138 Main St. in Somers, in January, and created a space that has a bit of everything, similar to a commercial or general store.

The Campbells bought the property about four years ago and renovated the upstairs apartment. It took a while for the store to come to life, after playing around with a few ideas of what to do with it. Karen had experience in a convenience store, but it didn’t really make sense to add another in an area that already had a lot of them.

The idea was to provide snacks, sweets and groceries, as well as things local residents and visitors want, including local produce, bait and tackle, and items from local artisans. . There is also a small thrift store inside, with donated clothes.

The store also offers tools and hardware, books, toys, games, home decor, and many other items not found elsewhere.

KK’s has product from several local farms and keeps offerings rotating, to allow more farms and small businesses to bring their products to the public.

“I just got honey from a local person, and I get jams and pickles from another person,” she said. “I really try to use all the little local people who need a little help. In return, they help me.

The store is set up in several rooms in a former residence, which offers a friendly and inviting experience. Campbell said guests are welcome to have a cup of coffee on the porch and she might even play a game of checkers with them. They can also just hang out.

“It’s discreet,” she said. “You can come here and relax. You can sit here or on the deck. I had a few people who got me to play checkers with me. Come in and sit in the back. You don’t have to buy anything.

Visitors are also surprised by the size of the store, Campbell said, often spending long periods browsing the hundreds of items.

“‘I didn’t know it was that big,’ they say,” she said. “The other thing people like is the variety of things. I got a lot of feedback on that. The products picked up. People really like corn. They also say they like my personality. .

Future plans are, well, up to what the public wants.

“It would be nice if we could do a walk-in beer cellar,” she said. “I’m open when people suggest something to me. I want this to be your “go-to” store. I want it to be unique, and when you walk in, it’s like a treasure hunt. Any way I can make it good for the community, that’s what I want to do.
