RAPID CITY, SD — As the Winter Olympics kicked off in Beijing, Main Street Square kicked off its own version on Saturday.

At the first Winter Games, sponsored by Monument Health, athletes of all ages competed in figure skating, triathlon, broomball and s’mores relay.

The event even featured Rapid City’s Martin Christofferson, who just tried out for the US Olympic bobsled team. He lit the torch of the event.

The idea was born out of Main Street Square’s collaboration with Monument Health, who both wanted to bring the local version of the Olympics to the Black Hills.

“It’s just that we worked with Monument in previous years and then we did some stuff with the rink. We also did morning yoga with them during the summers, so it’s like, you know, let’s do something something else fun to do and kind of keep up with the times of what’s going on in the world and we were like, ‘Hey, the Olympics is about as big as it gets, so why not create our own?” said Dustin VanHunnik, Chief Marketing Officer of Main Street Square.

Participants also received their respective materials for the location they completed.
