EVP PHILIPPE VANHILLES: “WE MUST ENSURE THAT THE BROADBAND INFRASTRUCTURE IS

BUILT WITH THE RIGHT AMBITION FOR PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY

Milan, November 29, 2021 – The Prysmian Group, the world leader in the energy and telecoms cable systems industry, is today participating in the Tech and Politics Forum 2021, the annual event of the European telecommunications industry, where it will again draw attention to the importance of ensuring the use of safe and better quality optical fibers in the construction of the European network infrastructure. The Executive Vice-President of the Group’s Telecoms Division, Philippe Vanhille, will illustrate his vision of a successful future telecoms and digital sector at the flagship event on telecoms policy – this year in digital mode.

As society grapples with the continuing threats of climate change, pandemics and economic inequalities, many are turning to digital technologies to provide solutions. To this end, the European Commission has started distributing Recovery and Resilience Facility grants to Member States which allocate 20% of funds to digitization initiatives. In the meantime, the EU and the US have renewed their technological cooperation efforts.

During a panel on the challenge of investing in digital infrastructure in Europe, Philippe Vanhille will present his perspective on the future model of broadband networks, highlighting the importance for investors and policymakers to adopt a long-term vision. In a rapidly changing digital sector, it is a question of bringing into play the best available technologies to build a sustainable and efficient digital network, so as not to call into question the massive public funding made available. In addition, higher quality optical fibers are the best solution to prevent and counter cybersecurity threats and securely transmit optical signals.

According to Vanhille: “In the rush to implement stimulus packages, we could end up building unsustainable infrastructure, or spending more money than we should. Despite the pressure of time, we need to make sure that the infrastructure, being an asset, is built with the right ambition in terms of performance and safety. ”The recently imposed duties on imports of optical cables from China are a It is an important sign of the awareness of the EC on this issue, but it is also important to focus on the technological heart of the network, optical fibers.

This can be guaranteed if governments dare to prescribe certain technical imperatives, abandoning, to a certain extent, the principle of technological neutrality and moving towards reducing the environmental impacts of the construction of infrastructure, encouraging the sustainability of solutions and the high quality of the components.

“We need the concept of deep fiber to generalize”, explains Philippe Vanhille, “a durable and quality fiber network that can meet the requirements of future digital applications. ”
