Synology is rolling out the next big update to its operating system, DiskStation Manager 7.0. Synology makes the best home NAS boxes, and with 8 million active users worldwide, it is also the largest manufacturer in this category.

DSM 7.0 started as a beta six months ago and is now available as a release candidate for dozens of NAS boxes. DSM 7.0 will go live on June 29, after which you will get an update on your NAS. But if you’re like me and don’t want to wait for the update to show up, here’s how to install DSM 7.0 on your NAS right now. But first, here’s a rundown of all the new features in DSM 7.0.

The ideal NAS

Synology DiskStation DS220 +

Synology DiskStation DS220 +

All the features you need

DiskStation DS220 + is an ideal NAS enclosure for home or Plex use. With two Gigabit Ethernet ports, the ability to store up to 32TB of storage, powerful hardware, and great software features, the DS220 + is the best all-around NAS enclosure for most users.

DSM 7.0 comes with a lot of new features

DSM 7.0 is a huge update that includes a ton of new features as well as a more modern user interface. A NAS is the perfect offline alternative to Google Photos, and Synology doubles that use case with Synology Photos, a unified photo backup solution. Photos merges Photo Station and Moments into one service, giving you a powerful tool to backup and manage your photos and videos.

There’s Active Insight, a cloud-hosted console to manage dozens or hundreds of NAS boxes around the world. The utility reports issues and offers troubleshooting tips, making it easier for businesses to monitor and resolve issues. Hybrid Share is another new utility that connects your NAS to Synology’s C2 cloud service.

DSM 7.0 is also getting a major security update, with Synology finally deploying single sign-on to protect your NAS box. There is also two-factor authentication and you can use a FIDO U2F hardware key like Yubico to secure your account.

How to install DSM 7.0 on your NAS

DSM 7.0 has just been released as a release candidate, which means that the stable version of the operating system is available for dozens of NAS boxes. If your NAS enclosure is in the list above, you can download the stable version now and install it on your NAS.

Before you begin, you should take a look at the DSM 7.0 Release Notes to see all the changes. Here’s how to install DSM 7.0 on your NAS:

  1. Go to Synology Download Center to download the DSM 7.0 package for your NAS.
  2. In the Select the type of product menu, select NAS.
  3. Enter your NAS model name or scroll down to locate it.
  4. You should see all of the operating system packages for your NAS. To view DSM 7.0, you will need to change the Operating system version (it is located on the right of the page) of the 6.2 series by default to series 7.0.
  5. You should now see the DSM 7.0 RC build package are displayed. Hit it Download button to start the download. The build will be saved as a .pat file.
  6. Once the version is downloaded, you will need to go to your NAS to start the update. In DSM 6.2, go to Control Panel.
  7. To choose Update and restore in the System section.
  8. To select Manual DSM Update.
  9. You can use the Browse to locate the DSM 7.0 version that you downloaded earlier. This will be the .pat file.
  10. Once you find the file, press Okay to start updating your NAS to DSM 7.0.

That’s all we can say about it. I have been using DSM 7.0 beta for a few months now on a DS1520 + and just updated my main DS1019 + to the stable version. Synology has fixed bugs over the past six months, and with the release candidate now available, it’s time to install DSM 7.0 on your NAS. If you don’t already have a NAS, now is a great time to change that.
